Rio Sidik

Rio was born and raised in Surabaya, Java, Indonesia. Music was always a big part of his life starting from the days he was in his mother's belly! Sidik's first appearance on stage was at the age of 10 with his brothers and sister, going on to appear regularly with his grandfather's big band. His 'master' as he calls him is his grandfather who was a trumpeter in the Navy and still continues to perform and teach.

His Grandfather, Daryono, gave him an incredibly strict education which has left him with a strong work ethic and commitment to his music. Sidik recalls when he was 5 minutes late for his lesson, his grandfather threw his mouthpiece into the well and refused to teach him for weeks.

Sidik has appeared as a soloist with most of Indonesia's top musicians including Indra Lesmana, Buby Chen, Erwin Gutawa Orchestra. In 2002 he married violinist Sally Jo and together they formed Saharadja - now one of Indonesia's most renowned world music bands. Together with Saharadja, Rio has performed all over South Africa, Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.

He is a composer and continues to write originals for Saharadja as well as producing a pop/rock album for a new group Siztas. His true passion is jazz - his favorites including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, and Freddy Hubbard, to name a few. The 'Rio Sidik Jazz Quartet' is one of Bali's top groups, performing all over the island. He has high hopes for this new quartet and is currently planning his solo album.
